8.01. - Pupils of the Christian Kindergarten and Primary School Archa in Petroupim rescue Minuartia smejkalii

Pupils of the Christian Kindergarten and Primary School Archa in Petroupim with their families planted plants of Minuartia smejkalii into the built-up rockery in their school garden within the School Ceremony of Stands. They have joined the network of growers within developing program of “Rescue planting in private gardens”. In the following years, pupils will monitor the growth of plants and collect the seeds that will serve in the future to return the species to nature in the event of its extinction.

Even though it is already mid-December, Minuartia plants planted in the rockeries within the program of “Rescue Planting in private gardens” are still growing nicely and they flourish well. The photos were taken at school garden of Primary School and Kindergarten Archa in Petroupim.

We have planted Minuartia smejkalii on sepentine rockeries in Bernartice, Vlašim, Benešov, Petroupim a Vojslavice in October 2017. These plants came from the seeds from in-situ populations of the Želivka SCI. Gardeners have also received instructions how to care about Minuartia smejkalii.

In less than a month there will be a two-day event at the Vodní dům (Water House) within the framework of the Science and Technology Week of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.  You will be able to practice selected research methods and on this basis try to suggest a rescue procedure.

The manual removal of moss, fallow and humus layers took place on one population of the National Nature Site Hadce near Želivka, where the last 4 bunches of the sandwort (Minuartia smejkalii) survive. 153 pre-cultivated sandworts were planted on this uncovered site. Please see the video.

Currently, works on removal of the humus layer in the Natura 2000 site Hadce u Želivky run at full speed. Experience shows Minuartia smejkalii is able to spread to newly disturbed sites quickly.
